ELECTIVE ACTIVITIES
There are a number of extracurricular options available to students. Most are established
programs that are offered on an on-going basis. We also have a number
of after-school clubs
that rotate each term enabling students to explore a variety of activities over the course
of the year. All of these offerings are organized by faculty and/or parents.
Academic Bowl – Mrs. Mary Ann Rex
The Greater Lawrence Academic Bowl is a five-month competition (December-April) involving
over 300 seventh and eighth graders from virtually all of the middle schools in Lawrence, Andover,
North Andover, and Methuen. Matches include a hands-on round, with students working in small
groups to complete multi-step projects, and a buzzer round including questions about history,
math, science, grammar, literature, and current events. Select students are invited to
participate. For more information, including teams, rankings, and the match schedule, go to
www.glec.org.
Basketball Team – Mr. Mike O’Dea
Boys’ and girls’ teams participate in the Merrimack Valley Catholic Basketball
League. From January through March, students compete with other area Catholic
schools for league championship status. For league information and game schedules,
go to www.mvcba.com. Available to students in
Grades 5-8.
Leadership Team – Mrs. Mary Ann Rex
Each year students in Grades 5-8 experience the democratic process by holding elections,
complete with campaign speeches and posters, to determine the middle school Leadership
Team. The team consists of one representative from each homeroom class, as well
as a 7th/8th grade president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. The Leadership
Team meets regularly to discuss upcoming events, activities, and issues affecting middle
school students.
School Choir – Mr. Donald Gaudreau
Our music instructor works with students in Grades 4-8 to develop their voices,
teach them to sing in harmony, and lead the congregation during the school's liturgical
celebrations. Students also participate in special concerts that are held in December and
June, along with the string orchesta.
String Orchestra – Mrs. Pamela Gaudreau
Learning to play string instruments is introduced and nurtured through this activity,
which is offered during the school day. Violin, viola, and cello are enthusiastically
tuned and played as students learn the basics and evolve to master more complicated
musical pieces. Concerts are held in December and June so parents, family, and friends
can enjoy the progress the students make during the year. Available to students
in Grades K-8.
Student Yearbook – Mrs. Mary Ann Rex
Much time and energy is put into creating a memory book that records the experiences
of our graduating students. Photos, poems, anecdotes, and letters are compiled into
a book that is sure to be cherished for years to come.
Quebec City Trip – Middle School Teachers
At the end of May, students in Grade 8 celebrate their final days before graduation with
a four-day trip to beautiful Quebec City. The trip is chock-full of fun and enrichment
involving all students and underscoring the special bond that has developed during
their time together. As an added bonus, our French language students get a chance
to show off their skills!
