Religion
The First Grade program is designed to provide a simple overview of the mysteries of the Faith through learning of the goodness of God who created and saved us. The children are drawn to respond to God in friendship and prayer. This program lays the foundation for the children's spiritual growth and the development of their knowledge of the Catholic faith.

Language Arts
By the end of Grade 1, students will:

• distinguish various sounds through phonetic, sight, and whole language strategies
• hear, name, print, and spell words appropriate for grade level and ability
• read a variety of materials for enjoyment, practice, vocabulary development, and information
• apply basic skills for writing simple sentences
• learn, practice, and apply printing skills
• use picture and context clues to develop comprehension skills
• practice reading strategies for understanding
• develop listening skills

Mathematics
By the end of Grade 1, students will:

• learn addition and subtraction facts 1 through 10
• develop concept of time and money through use of manipulatives
• recognize and demonstrate different forms of patterning
• recognize and reproduce different shapes
• read and solve math word problems

Science
By the end of Grade 1, students will:

• investigate plant life and cycles
• observe and describe animals, settings, characteristics, habitats
• explore elements of sound and light
• investigate properties of the earth, weather, sky, stars, etc.
• observe and demonstrate knowledge of the senses and health
• discuss the human body in light of changing, growing, and health
• address areas of Physical Science: magnetism, electricity, static electricity, motion and pressure, space, and aerodynamics

Social Studies
By the end of Grade 1, students will:

• develop a clearer understanding of each person’s place in the family, school, community, and country
• describe and define the celebration of holidays

Computer Technology
By the end of Grade 1, students will:

• identify uses for the computer at home and at school
• discuss ownership of computer-created work
• identify and discuss basic computer terms
• identify basic word processing terms
• key letters and words using basic word processing skills
• experiment with age- and grade-appropriate software

Music
By the end of Grade 1, students will:

• understand that musical notation can represent melodic direction and duration
• create by singing, clapping or unpitched percussion instruments, simple rhythm patterns
• listen with concentrated attention to longer selections of a variety of music

Art
Progressively from Kindergarten through Grade 2 students will:

• use a variety of materials and media (e.g. crayons, chalk, paint, clay) and various kinds of papers, textures, and yarns – and understand how to use them to produce different visual effects
• create artwork in a variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional media
• learn to take care of materials and tools and use them safely
• learn the elements and principles of design and be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following skills:
  • for color: explore and experiment with the use of color in dry and wet media, identify primary and secondary colors
  • for line: explore the use of line in 2-D and 3-D works
  • for texture: identify variety of textures in the environment and artwork
  • for pattern and symmetry: explore the use of patterns and symmetrical shapes in 2-D and 3-D works
  • create 2-D from direct observation
  • create 2-D and 3-D from memory or imagination in order to tell a story or embody a fantasy or idea
  • learn ways of discussing and viewing art
  • classify artwork into general categories such as painting, collage, photography, sculpture, and pottery
  • select a work or works created during the year and discuss them by explaining how the work was made and why it was chosen

Physical Education
By the end of Grade 1, students will:

• perform a variety of manipulative (throwing, catching, striking), locomotor (walking, running, skipping, hopping, galloping), and non-locomotor (twisting, balancing, extending) skills
• accept the feelings resulting from challenges, successes, and failures in physical activity
• promote fair play and safe conduct in a positive sportsmanlike manner
• recognize that physical education is a component of healthy living
• perform activities with a partner, small groups, whole classes, and individually that promote all levels of sport skills, lifetime games, and recreation

Library
By the end of Grade 1, students will:

• listen to a story attentively without interrupting
• understand proper care and handling of books
• use appropriate library manners
• know the location of Easy (picture books) in the library
• understand the concept of title
• understand the concept of author
• understand the concept of illustrator
• follow proper checkout procedures
• return Easy books to proper shelf location by color
• place returned materials to proper location when entering library
• return books in a timely fashion
