Religion
The children will focus on how to live their lives as Christians, as directed by
Jesus' words in the Scriptures. They are invited to make moral choices by following
the Ten Commandments and by learning about and applying the Beatitudes and the Sacrament
of Reconciliation.
Language Arts
By the end of Grade 4, students will:
- begin to use compound sentences and create and use sentences of varying lengths
- write for specific purpose
- write to present his/her point of view, pose questions, and record information
- organize and develop ideas using paragraphs
- vary sentence structure using simple and complex sentences
- use media to enhance communication of ideas
- revise and edit own work and peer evaluation
- demonstrate an understanding of plot, settings, and characterization
- develop higher-level literal and inferential comprehension skills: summarizing, predicting, story mapping, character development and analysis, and conflict resolution
- identify basic facts and ideas from what has been read, heard or viewed, applying strategies that include recalling prior knowledge, previewing illustrations, listening to others’ ideas, and comparing and classifying information
- identify and apply grammar related to parts of speech
Mathematics
By the end of Grade 4, students will:
- demonstrate knowledge of values through millions
- solve word problems using a variety of strategies
- use estimation to determine reasonable answers
- apply basic facts to solve more complex multiplication and division problems
- demonstrate knowledge of both standard and metric units of measurement
- construct and interpret tables and graphs: line, bar and circle
- add and subtract fractions with like denominators
- identify figures as lines, line segments or rays
- explore plane and space figures and their parts
Science
By the end of Grade 4, students will:
- name and describe objects in our solar system
- explore the affects of movements in the solar system
- investigate rock formation and classification
- describe types of weathering and forces that change Earth’s surface
- understand basic parts and functions of senses, organs, surfaces, and digestive and circulatory systems and how to keep them healthy
- study plant classification and function of parts of flowers
- explore diversity and adaptations of animals
- complete lab reports
Social Studies
By the end of Grade 4, students will:
- tell how communities transmit and teach culture and place events in temporal order
- define and locate specific physical features and potential natural boundaries of regions
- locate and describe various climates and natural resources of the region
- compare and differentiate all regions of the United States
- know and locate cardinal and intermediate directions: poles, equators, hemispheres, continents, oceans, and major mountain ranges
- locate their own communities in relation to important geographical features
- use and interpret various types of maps and graphs
Computer Technology
By the end of Grade 4, students will:
- recognize the correct use of copyrighted materials in multimedia products
- practice proper keyboarding techniques for upper and lower case letters
- apply word processing terms and functions
- use email as a telecommunications tool
- use search strategies to locate information electronically
- create a multimedia project with narration
- develop an understanding of data collection on spreadsheet
- create a table/graph from spreadsheet data
Music
By the end of Grade 4, students will:
- demonstrate knowledge of differences in music and different times in history
- read and write more-complex rhythms and melodies
- be able to sing well enough to produce the desired musical quality
- identify modality of a song (major or minor)
- be able to play more-complex pieces on the recorder
Art
Progressively from Grade 3 through Grade 4, students will:
- use a variety of materials and media (e.g. crayons, chalk, paint, clay) and various kinds of papers, textures, and yarns and understand how to use them to produce different visual effects
- learn to use appropriate vocabulary related to methods, materials, and techniques
- learn to take care of materials and tools, and use them safely
- learn the elements and principles of design and be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following skills:
- for color: explore and experiment with the use of color in dry and wet media, identify primary and secondary colors
- for line: explore the use of line in 2D and 3D works
- for texture: identify variety of textures in the environment and artwork
- for pattern and symmetry: explore the use of patterns and symmetrical shapes in 2-D and 3-D works
- for shape and form: explore the use of shapes and forms in 2-D and 3-D work
- for space and composition: explore composition by creating artwork with a center of interest, repetition, and/or balance and demonstrate an understanding of foreground, middle ground, and background
- create 2-D and 3-D works from memory or imagination to tell a story or embody a fantasy or idea
- select a work or works created during the year and explain how the work was made and why it was chosen
- select works for exhibition and work as a group to create a display
- develop and use criteria for informal classroom discussions about art
- explain strengths and weaknesses in their own work and share comments constructively and supportively within group
Physical Education
By the end of Grade 4, students will:
- know the benefits and methods of achieving cardiovascular fitness
- identify major muscle groups and their locations in the body
- demonstrate expected grade-level proficiency in locomotor and non-locomotor skills
- learn rules, basic offensive and defensive skills of lead-up sport games and actual sport games
- demonstrate an awareness of the feelings of others and the importance of being supportive of teammates/classmates
Library
By the end of Grade 4, students will:
- use call numbers to locate non-fiction materials
- explain the concept of biography
- select a biography in the biography section
- identify call number, author, title, subject cards in the card catalog
- explain the purpose and content of the almanac
- use an encyclopedia index to find a subject
- understand when to use an atlas
- use an atlas to locate places
