PRE-KINDERGARTEN

Overview
The Pre-Kindergarten Program allows for social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth – providing children with a developmentally appropriate experience. These experiences are achieved through the exploration and manipulation of math, language, science, art, and religious activities.

Religion
Students learn and practice:

  • how to recite prayers and The Sign of the Cross
  • about God’s love and how we are special gifts from God
  • how to thank God for his great gifts (family, friends, our earth, animals, and plants)
  • celebrating religious holidays

Social and Emotional Development
Students will have the opportunity to:

  • work and play with others, sharing and taking turns
  • enhance self-esteem and self-control
  • try new activities and experiences
  • encourage respect for others and classroom materials
  • work independently and participate in groups
  • practice paying attention in a class setting
  • learn the importance of following rules and making good choices

Early Literacy/Language/Writing
Students will:

  • practice following simple and multi-step directions
  • listen and communicate with others
  • listen to a wide-variety of stories, poems, and finger-plays
  • develop a wider vocabulary
  • recognize and print first name
  • develop visual and auditory discrimination through books
  • begin to identify letters and sounds
  • practice writing skills
  • develop sequential order of events through stories and dramatic play

Math/Number Development
Students will practice:

  • counting, sorting, sequencing, and graphing
  • creating and repeating patterns
  • showing one-to-one correspondence using objects
  • recognizing basic shapes
  • using different forms of measurement
  • recognizing and printing numbers

Science
Students will:

  • participate in and observe experiments involving magnets, water, shadows, colors, and chemicals
  • learn basic facts about plants, animals, space, and the human body
  • learn and use vocabulary to describe weather and seasons
  • practice making predictions

Art
Students will be able to:

  • foster creativity and imagination using and exploring a variety of materials
  • develop skills in cutting, painting, tracing, and gluing
  • appreciate different forms of art
  • express new knowledge through their art projects

Coordination and Motor Skills
Students will develop:

  • large muscles through jumping, climbing, balancing, and throwing
  • fine-motor skills by participating in activities such as beading, cutting, and tracing
  • hand-eye and foot-eye coordination using bean bags, balls, and hoops

Music
Students will:

  • participate in singing, dancing, marching, and using instruments
  • learn about rhythm and movement
  • use songs to enhance learning and listening skills
  • use music for auditory discrimination
