Supplies
Religion
The school year will be focused on the theology of reconciliation and of the Eucharist
in preparation for the reception of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. The
children will discuss and participate in activities which reinforce these themes. Preparation
for a fuller participation at the Mass will include a study of elements, vestments,
and prayers.
Language Arts
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
- apply phonics skills to expand reading and writing vocabulary
- develop skills to enhance comprehension and enjoyment of reading materials
- identify basic elements of a story (i.e. plot, setting, characters, etc.)
- apply editing skills to writing
- use the dictionary to identify word meaning, parts of speech and syllables
- begin writing cursive lower case and capital letters
Mathematics
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
- learn and apply addition and subtraction facts 10 through 20
- use analog and digital clocks to tell time
- identify properties of simple shapes
- identify and apply value of coins and bills in counting out money
- apply skills to solve word problems
Science
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
- apply steps of Scientific Method for science inquiry
- identify plant parts and their functions
- compare animal behaviors, characteristics, and habitats
- identify how the body works and how to maintain healthy habits
- investigate variables that effect weather and climate
- discover how objects and electricity move
- participate in activities that explore physical science topics such as magnetism, electricity, static electricity, motion and pressure, space and aerodynamics
Social Studies
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
- identify maps of the world and the United States
- identify major continents and oceans
- broaden understanding and appreciation of various cultures
- develop understanding of personal responsibility in our world
Computer Technology
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
- identify the Internet as a source of information
- identify uses of technology in the community
- recognize an individual’s rights of ownership to computer-generated work
- use correct finger placement for keyboard home row keys
- use word processing to enter, save, print, and retrieve text
- identify and use electronic drawing tools to combine graphics and text
- edit a word processing document and make corrections
- enhance core curriculum activity through technology skills and applications
Music
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
- understand the duration of basic notations
- demonstrate rhythm using percussion instruments and body movements
- sing from memory a varied repertoire of songs alone or with a group
- listen to the music of composers from different periods demonstrating the knowledge that music has changed throughout history
Art
Progressively from Kindergarten through Grade 2 students will:
- use a variety of materials and media (e.g. crayons, chalk, paint, clay) and various kinds of papers, textures, and yarns – and understand how to use them to produce different visual effects
- create artwork in a variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional media
- learn to take care of materials and tools and use them safely
- learn the elements and principles of design and be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following skills:
- for color: explore and experiment with the use of color in dry and wet media, identify primary and secondary colors
- for line: explore the use of line in 2-D and 3-D works
- for texture: identify variety of textures in the environment and artwork
- for pattern and symmetry: explore the use of patterns and symmetrical shapes in 2-D and 3-D works
- create 2-D from direct observation
- create 2-D and 3-D from memory or imagination in order to tell a story or embody a fantasy or idea
- learn ways of discussing and viewing art
- classify artwork into general categories such as painting, collage, photography, sculpture, and pottery
- select a work or works created during the year and discuss them by explaining how the work was made and why it was chosen
Physical Education
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
- practice, acquire, and refine a variety of manipulative, locomotor and non-locomotor movement skills
- chase, fell, dodge, and catch others in activities
- travel changing speeds and direction in response to rhythms and activities
- perform basic balance and coordination skills in activities
- demonstrate an ability in the fundamentals of throwing, catching, striking, kicking, and bouncing
- promote safety through proper care of equipment and space available
Library By the end of Grade 2, students will:
- distinguish between fiction and non-fiction
- understand the call number for non-fiction
- appreciate humorous poetry
- know the location of poetry books in the library
- identify the parts of a book: table of contents, index
- understand the concept of publisher
- use the call number to location soft cover fiction
- use/take care of a tape recorder
