Religion
The seventh grade religion curriculum is based on the realization that Jesus is the center of human existence. The key to knowing yourself and being the best person you can be is to know Jesus. Jesus is the way to the Father, peace, and happiness. Jesus is the truth. He reveals the Father, and He teaches the truth that everyone seeks. Jesus is the life. Faith is the source of this life, which is strengthened through Scripture, prayer, sacraments, and our faith community, the Church.

Language Arts
By the end of Grade 7, Students will:

  • identify parts of speech and how they function in a sentence
  • develop an understanding of and ability to use parts of speech in all written work
  • identify and correct structural writing errors
  • develop a well-written paragraph/essay for a special audience using descriptive narrative, expository, and persuasive writing
  • outline and summarize specific reading material
  • apply recognition and evaluation of story elements to short stories, novels, and plays
  • recognize and name major and minor characters and plot elements in a story
  • demonstrate depth of understanding of character traits
  • apply critical reading skills
  • read and analyze poetry

Mathematics
By the end of Grade 7, students will:

  • construct, read and interpret tables, charts, and graphs
  • classify and construct geometric figures
  • use properties and work with variable expressions
  • use measurement formulas to find the perimeter and area of simple geometric figures
  • write fractions and decimals as percents
  • find the surface of prisms and cylinders
  • solve equations with fractions
  • use proportions to solve problems
  • find simple probabilities and odds
  • graph points and lines on the coordinate plane
  • interpret slope
  • solve problems by writing equations
  • compute, estimate, and solve problems using decimals
  • write and solve equations using integers

Science
By the end of Grade 7, students will:

  • identify variables in an experiment
  • list properties of minerals
  • read and interpret contour maps
  • understand components of the universe
  • use the Periodic Table
  • use scientific method
  • write lab reports
  • classify living organisms
  • compare and contrast chemical and physical changes
  • explain elements and compound solutions
  • design an experiment
  • explain interdependence of living creatures
  • understand weather
  • read and interpret weather maps
  • identify soil types
  • understand erosion
  • understand ground water
  • understand dynamics of the ocean
  • understand motion of the ocean
  • identify life in ocean zones
  • understand variables in an experiment

Social Studies
By the end of Grade 7, students will:

  • explain how the Republic of the U.S.was created
  • explain how and why the U.S. Constitution was adopted
  • understand the importance of the Bill of Rights
  • describe how the U.S. economy changed from agricultural to industrial
  • describe national growth and westward expansion
  • understand the causes of the Civil war (e.g. sectionalism, slavery, expansion)
  • understand the relationship between U.S. geography and its growth

World Language – French
By the end of Grade 7, students will:

  • continue to build on the foundation established in Grade 6
  • possess additional skills of listening, reading, speaking, writing, and understanding
  • expand conversational skills to include: self-description, description of others, possessions, opinions, getting around town, describing where one lives, and shopping
  • reinforce skills in negative and interrogative constructions
  • advance to the future proche
  • be introduced to the passé compose
  • focus on adjective formation
  • memorize relevant topics covered
  • learn about school life in France
  • continue to discover similarities and differences between French and American daily life

World Language – Spanish
By the end of Grade 7, students will:

  • continue to build on the foundation established in Grade 6
  • possess additional skills of listening, reading, speaking, writing, and understanding of all three conjugations in the present tense
  • conjugate the verb "to be" in the present tense
  • expand conversational skills to include: self-description, description of others, possessions, opinions, getting around town, describing where one lives, and shopping
  • learn regular AR, ER, IR verbs
  • conjugate irregular verbs: conocer, saber, decir, ir, etc.
  • reinforce skills in negative and interrogative constructions
  • focus on adjective formation
  • memorize relevant topics covered
  • learn about school life in Spanish-speaking countries
  • continue to discover similarities and differences between Spanish and American daily life

Computer Technology
By the end of Grade 7, students will:

  • describe the impact of technology on the skills needed in the workplace
  • select and use technology tools to collect, analyze, and display data
  • research, create, publish, and present projects related to content areas using a variety of technology tools
  • choose charts, tables, and graphs to best represent data
  • create, modify, and use spreadsheets to solve problems related to content areas

Music
By the end of Grade 7, students will:

  • be able to identify music from a variety of periods and discuss the styles and instruments used in each period
  • be able to write original music using standard notation including lyrics
  • understand the science, to a greater degree, through listening and creating their own instruments

Art
Progressively from Grade 5 through Grade 8, students will:

  • expand the repertoire of 2-D and 3-D art processes, techniques, and materials with a focus on the range of effects possible within each medium, such as: 2-D transparent and opaque media, wet, dry, stippled, blended, wash effects, printmaking, etc.
  • create artwork that demonstrates an awareness of the range and purpose of such tools as pens, brushes, markers, etc.
  • use the appropriate vocabulary related to the methods, materials, and techniques students have learned and used previously
  • learn the elements and principles of design and be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following skills:
    • for color: use and be able to identify hues, values, intermediate shades, tints, tones, colors, etc. and demonstrate awareness of color by painting objective studies from life and free-form abstractions that employ relative properties of color
    • for line: use and be able to identify various types of line, for example in contour drawings, calligraphy, freehand drawings, etc.
    • for texture: use and be able to differentiate between surface texture and the illusion of texture (visual texture)
    • for shape: form and pattern, use and be able to identify an expanding and increasingly sophisticated array of shapes and forms, such as organic, geometric, positive and negative, or varieties of symmetry
    • for space and composition: create unified 2-D and 3-D compositions that demonstrate an understanding of balance, repetition, scale, rhythm, harmony and emphasis
    • create 2-D and 3-D representational artwork from direct observation in order to develop skills of perception, discrimination, physical coordination, and memory of detail
    • create symbolic artwork by substituting symbols for objects, relationships or ideas
    • create artwork that employs use of free form from symbolic imagery that demonstrates personal invention, and/or conveys ideas and emotions (e.g. conflict/cooperation, happiness/grief, excitement/repose)
    • produce work that show understanding of the concept of craftsmanship
    • demonstrate ability to describe preliminary concepts verbally, to visualize concepts in clear schematic layouts, and to organize and complete projects
    • maintain a portfolio of sketches and finished work
    • create and prepare artwork for group or individual public exhibitions
    • demonstrate a fundamental awareness of architectural styles and the ways that these have influences painting and sculpture

Physical Education
By the end of Grade 7, students will:

  • demonstrate responsible personal and social conduct used in physical-activity settings
  • demonstrate knowledge of cardiovascular fitness to enable them to lead a healthy life style
  • demonstrate body strength in major muscle groups
  • develop knowledge and performance skills in a variety of team sports, individual, and lifetime activities
  • acquire social skills that will contribute to a well-rounded lifestyle by participating in movement-skill activities
  • demonstrate an awareness of the feelings of others of being supportive of teammates/classmates

Library
By the end of Grade 7, students will:

  • use the periodical index to locate specific articles
  • identify subjects related to the one being researched
